On 2 October, a total solar eclipse will take place for the second time this year. In Ukraine, we cannot observe it, but the impact of this cosmic phenomenon can be felt even by those who will not be able to watch it live, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports, citing NASA.

The solar eclipse on 2 October 2024 will be an annular eclipse.

An annular solar eclipse occurs when the Moon’s apparent diameter, which is smaller than the Sun’s, blocks most of the sun’s light, making the Sun appear as a ring. Hence the name of the phenomenon.

The band of the ring-shaped phase of the eclipse will begin in the Pacific Ocean. After that, it will move in an easterly and then southeasterly direction, cross the equator and reach the southern part of South America, passing through the territory of Chile and Argentina, and then enter the Atlantic Ocean.

Thus, different phases can be seen in the following areas:

  • in the extreme south-western zone of the Atlantic Ocean
  • in most of the Pacific Ocean;
  • in the southern parts of South America, including Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, central and southern Bolivia, and southern Peru and Brazil.

In Ukraine, as well as in Europe, the eclipse on 2 October will not be visible, as its peak will be at 21:50. The eclipse will begin at 18:43 and end at 00:46 Kyiv time.

The next total solar eclipse will take place no earlier than 2026 and will pass over the northern segments of Greenland, Iceland and Spain.
