The World Bank will allocate up to $40 million in aid to NEC Ukrenergo for the restoration of Ukraine’s power grid.
This was announced by First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy Denys Shmyhal after talks with the institution’s Managing Director for Operations Anna Bjerde on Monday, February 2.
“We have agreed on further assistance: the World Bank plans to allocate up to $40 million to Ukrenergo for the purchase of equipment necessary to restore the power system. We continue to work together to strengthen Ukraine’s energy system,” Shmyhal wrote on social media, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".
Ukraine received 38 tons of energy equipment in one week
According to Shmyhal, Ukraine received more than 38 tons of energy equipment from Switzerland, Germany, Denmark, Austria, and Slovakia last week. Generators, transformers, cogeneration units, and other equipment from the European Union, Lithuania, Austria, Poland, Finland, France, Azerbaijan, the Netherlands, as well as from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and UNICEF, are on their way to Ukraine.
“In addition, nearly 342 tons of aid have already been transferred from the Ministry of Energy’s hubs to electricity distribution system operators, heat and power generating companies, oil and gas companies, and local authorities,” the minister said after a meeting of the emergency response headquarters in Kyiv and the region.
Meanwhile, additional cogeneration plants have been launched in the Kyiv region. According to Shmyhal, Ukraine has agreements with partners to supply additional such plants. “The number one task is to generate as much additional power as possible. This is a priority,” he stressed.
