Airport in Sweden closed due to drones in the sky: what is known

6 November 22:46

On the evening of November 6, unidentified drones were spotted near one of Sweden’s largest airports, Gothenburg-Landvätter. Because of this, air traffic was temporarily stopped, and some flights were diverted to other airports, including Copenhagen. This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian" with reference to Aftonbladet.

The Swedish Civil Aviation Authority reported the appearance of drones over the airport.

“I can confirm that drones have been spotted in Landvätter. Air traffic is currently suspended,” said Björn Stavas, a spokesman for the agency, in a comment to the publication.

The reasons for the appearance of the drones are still being investigated. Swedish intelligence services are conducting an investigation, as such incidents have already occurred in several European countries.

A series of incidents with unidentified drones in Europe

In recent weeks, several NATO countries have reported the appearance of unidentified drones near strategic facilities.

Belgium: On November 1, drones were spotted over the Kleine Brogel airbase, where US nuclear weapons are stored. Defense Minister Theo Francken said that the drones were spying on fighter jets and ammunition.

on November 4, unidentified drones reappeared near the same base. According to Belgian security services, a foreign state, most likely Russia, may be involved in the incidents.

Germany: on November 5, the Hanover airport was temporarily shut down due to a drone sighting, followed by Munich.

Spain: for the first time, an unknown drone was spotted flying over an airport on the island of Mallorca, which also led to a temporary suspension of air traffic.

In September 2025 alone, at least 14 cases of temporary suspension of airport operations due to drone intrusions were recorded in Europe, a record high for the last year.

What’s next

The Swedish police and Säpo security service are investigating the incident in Gothenburg. So far, there are no official versions, but experts do not rule out that this may be part of a planned series of reconnaissance or destabilization operations in the EU.

The Civil Aviation Authority urges passengers to follow flight updates and not to arrive at the airport without flight confirmation.
