Agrarian challenge in Vinnytsia region: cold nights slow down development of soybeans and corn

A significant lag in the development of soybeans and corn was recorded in Vinnytsia region due to abnormally low night temperatures. This was reported by the Vinnytsia Regional Military Administration, citing data from the Institute of Feed and Agriculture of Podillya NAAS, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.

According to experts, during the second decade of June, night temperatures sometimes dropped to 9-10°C on the soil surface, which is below the biological minimum for heat-loving crops. In particular, corn and soybeans react to such temperatures by stunting their growth.

Even if there is sufficient soil moisture, low temperatures interfere with the normal absorption of water and nutrients by plants. The situation is exacerbated by a lack of productive moisture and low levels of easily hydrolyzed nitrogen in the region’s soils.

Currently, corn has formed only 5-6 leaves on most fields, while according to long-term norms, there should be 10-12 leaves at this time. Similar dynamics are observed in soybean crops.

This year, almost 320 thousand hectares were allocated for corn and 172 thousand hectares for soybeans in Vinnytsia region. Farmers are already worried about lower yields if weather conditions do not improve in the near future.
