Algorithm for returning from the HLP: the lawyer explained step by step

Servicemen who are in the status of AWOL and want to legally return to service must follow a clear algorithm of actions.
This was stated by lawyer Vitaliy Baranovsky in an interview with the YouTube channel "Komersant Ukrainian".
First, a soldier must find a military unit that is ready to accept him and wait for a call for an interview.
“Vacancies in military units can be found on job search sites such as Work.ua, Rabota.ua, etc. There, military units publish announcements about the search for personnel: from engineering and logistics to combat units. You should send a resume, inform about your intention to return from the NWC and wait for a response,” Baranovsky added.
Once a serviceman has received an invitation for an interview, he should inform the military law enforcement service at his place of residence or at the place of deployment of the unit.
“You have to officially send the following message: I am in the AFU, I intend to return, I was called for an interview in such and such a unit. The SCJ issues an order to report to the military unit, which is valid for 24 hours,” the lawyer emphasized.
Then the soldier goes either to the military enlistment office to “check in” or directly to the unit, Baranovsky continued. There he is interviewed by the commander, a doctor, a psychologist, and sometimes even a polygraph.
“Elite units, such as K-2 in Kyiv, are very careful in their selection process. If a soldier is approved, he can get a written consent to return to service, and even temporarily return home – without the risk of detention, because the route and decision are officially recorded,” the lawyer said.
Thus, the algorithm looks like this:
- Find a military unit and send a resume.
- receive an invitation for an interview.
- notify the military law enforcement service and receive an order to come.
- arrive at the VSP or directly to the unit within the prescribed time.
- Pass an interview and medical and psychological examination.
- Receive written consent and resume service.
“If everything is done correctly, a serviceman can safely return to the army, avoiding criminal liability,” Baranovsky summarized.
