The annexation of Greenland and the Nobel insult: why a congresswoman is proposing to remove Trump

21 January 18:52

Democratic Congresswoman Yasmine Ansari has publicly called for the removal of US President Donald Trump from office, saying he is allegedly unable to perform his duties due to “serious mental disorders.”

In a post on social media, the politician emphasized that the US Constitution provides for the 25th Amendment in such cases and called for its “immediate” application, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".

What are the accusations based on?

As evidence, Ansari published a copy of Trump’s letter to Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre. In it, according to the congresswoman, the US president links his desire to annex Greenland with his personal dissatisfaction at not receiving the Nobel Peace Prize.

In the letter, Trump also claims that he is “not obligated to think about peace” because, according to him, he was not recognized by the Nobel Committee for ending “eight wars.”

What is the 25th Amendment?

The 25th Amendment to the US Constitution, ratified in 1967 after the assassination of John F. Kennedy, defines the order of succession in the event that the president:

  • dies or resigns;
  • is removed from office;
  • is deemed unable to perform his duties.

The key mechanism is that the vice president and a majority of the cabinet must formally declare the president incapacitated. In this case, power is temporarily transferred to the vice president. The president can challenge this decision, after which Congress has the final say.

Calls to invoke the 25th Amendment on Trump are not new

Similar discussions arose during his previous term. However, the current statement comes against the backdrop of:

  • the intensification of political polarization in the US;
  • Trump’s active foreign policy rhetoric;
  • the use of personal motives in international affairs, which has drawn criticism from opponents.
