Australia increases aid to Ukraine: another $7 million for the energy sector

23 January 06:46

Australia has announced additional financial assistance to Ukraine to support the energy sector, which is suffering systemic damage as a result of Russian shelling. The statement was released by the Australian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".

According to the ministry’s statement, the Australian government will allocate 10 million Australian dollars (about 7 million US dollars) to the Ukraine Energy Support Fund.

As a result of this decision, Australia’s total contribution to the fund will increase to US$27 million.

Energy support amid shelling

The Australian Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized that the additional funding is intended to help Ukraine in the face of Russia’s ongoing attacks on civilian infrastructure and critical energy facilities.

The funds received will enable the purchase of equipment and resources needed to stabilize the power system and get through difficult periods of peak loads.

Total amount of Australian aid

Since February 2022, Australia has provided Ukraine with military, humanitarian, economic, and energy support worth approximately US$1.2 billion. The continent-sized country last provided a military aid package in December last year, worth US$63 million.

In addition to financial contributions, Australia is among the countries that promised at the beginning of the year to strengthen Ukraine’s air defense system in response to the escalation of missile and drone attacks by Russia.

International solidarity

Canberra’s decision once again confirms Australia’s stable position in supporting Ukraine and its energy resilience. Funding for the Energy Support Fund is seen as one of the key tools for international partners to respond quickly to the challenges facing Ukraine’s energy system during the war.
