The administration of US President Donald Trump has denied reports that thousands of foreigners illegally staying in the US are to be transferred to the US military base in Guantanamo Bay this week, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.
White House spokeswoman Caroline Leavitt responded to The Washington Post‘s publication, which reported on the preparation of such an operation:
“This story is fake news. Nothing is happening,” she said on social network X.
The WP article reported that the citizens in question are from many countries, including the UK, France, Germany, Poland, Turkey, Ukraine, and Haiti.
According to the publication, the Trump administration considers this decision to be forced due to overcrowding in domestic detention centers.
Back in January, Donald Trump announced a large-scale deportation and the possibility of sending up to 30,000 migrants to Guantanamo Bay.
This practice is not new: the base has been used to hold detainees at sea, but has often been criticized by human rights activists. In particular, a 2024 report by the International Refugee Assistance Project (IRAP) spoke of “inhumane conditions” of detention.
