The Ukrainian military has managed to stabilise the situation near the village of New York in Donbas, regaining control of part of the settlement and unblocking the Defence Forces, which were surrounded by the Russian army. This is stated in a statement by Azov, according to "Komersant Ukrainian"
“At the time of the brigade’s involvement in combat operations in the area, the situation on the front line was catastrophic. However, thanks to the high morale, courage and professionalism of the brigade’s fighters, Azov managed to stabilise the situation, regain control of part of New York and unblock the Defence Forces, which were surrounded by enemy forces,” the statement said.
Azov noted that the situation on this front remains tense. Russian troops carry out up to 15 attacks a day in the Azov Sea Fleet’s area of responsibility. However, despite the fierce fighting, our soldiers are holding the line and successfully conducting counterattacks.
“The enemy has repeatedly claimed that it has completely occupied New York. However, this is another manipulation of the occupiers. The defence forces control a part of the settlement and are doing everything possible to liberate Ukrainian territories,” the statement said.
It should be noted that the General Staff began reporting intensified assaults and fighting in the Toretsk sector in mid-June 2024.
In early August 2024, the Russian occupiers distributed a video of how they had planted a flag on the roof of a school in New York and claimed to have captured the village. On 6 August, this information was denied on Telegram by the head of the Centre for Countering Disinformation, Andriy Kovalenko.
