Boxing will be included in the program of the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games (LA28). This decision was made today, March 20, during the 144th session of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in Costa Navarino (Greece). This is reported on the IOC website, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports

“The decision was made on the basis of a proposal by the IOC Executive Committee following the recommendation of the Olympic Program Commission and the provisional recognition of World Boxing as the international federation governing boxing at the world level in the Olympic Movement,” the IOC said in a statement.

Boxing was not included in the original LA28 sports program approved by the IOC in February 2022 due to problems with the International Boxing Association (IBA). After the IBA’s recognition was revoked on June 22, 2023, the issue of boxing’s inclusion in the LA28 program was put on hold.

The IOC emphasized that national federations must reach agreement on a new federation to include boxing. on February 26, the IOC temporarily recognized World Boxing, which unites 88 national federations.

“World Boxing is very grateful to the IOC for the confidence they have shown in our organization by reinstating boxing in the LA2028 program. I can assure them that we will do everything in our power to ensure that we operate to the highest standards of governance and transparency and to ensure sporting integrity,” said World Boxing Chairman Boris van der Vorst.

Boxing at the Olympic Games

Boxing has a rich history at the Olympic Games, having first appeared on the program in 1904. Since then, it has been present at every Olympics, with the exception of the 1912 Stockholm Games, when local law banned the sport.

At the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, boxing competitions were organized by the Paris Olympic Commission after the IBA’s recognition was revoked, which ensured a fair qualification system and participation of athletes.

The boxing competition was attended by 68 NOCs, of which 31 won medals in 13 disciplines. This was the highest number among all sports.
