Bulgarian politician makes territorial claims to Ukraine: which region is being encroached upon

The leader of the Bulgarian party “Renaissance” Kostadin Kostadinov said that Bulgaria has the right to claim part of Ukraine. The politician wrote about this on his Facebook page, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.

Kostadinov wrote the post in response to the recent situation with US President-elect Donald Trump. At a press conference in Florida, the latter proposed ideas about controlling Greenland, Canada, the Panama Canal, and the American Gulf.

According to the Bulgarian politician, Trump’s claims against Canada are fully justified. And there is nothing more logical and normal than two countries with a common history, a common origin, a common language and a largely indigenous people, such as the United States and Canada, becoming one country.

“The case is similar with Southern Bessarabia. The Bulgarian state has over 450 years of history, and Bulgarians have been the indigenous population of this region (since the 6th century) until now. For comparison, Ukraine has been in possession of Southern Bessarabia for only 34 years,” Kostadinov wrote.

He added that there is nothing more logical than the unification of Bulgaria and Macedonia into one common state, and the return of Southern Bessarabia back to Bulgaria.

“Ukraine will also disintegrate at the upcoming peace congress,” Kostadinov predicted.

The Ukrainian Embassy in Bulgaria has already responded to the incident.

“In connection with the statement of the leader of the Revival party, Kostadinov, about territorial claims to Ukraine and calls to annex “Southern Bessarabia” to Bulgaria, the Embassy of Ukraine appeals to the leadership of the Republic of Bulgaria to condemn the statements of a politician who incites the destruction of international law, distorts historical facts and encourages the redistribution of borders in Europe,” the embassy said in a statement.

The diplomatic institution added that the statements of the leader of the Renaissance party regarding territorial encroachments on Ukraine are unacceptable for a politician of an EU member state and confirm his systematic promotion of the Kremlin’s narratives.

What is known about Kostadin Kostadinov

Kostadin Todorov Kostadinov is a far-right and ultranationalist Bulgarian politician. He is the chairman of the ultra-nationalist party Revival. The politician is known for his anti-European and anti-NATO stance, anti-Americanism and anti-Western sentiments, as well as anti-migrant and anti-Macedonian views.

Kostadinov also held strong anti-Roma views, describing Roma as “parasites” and “inhuman parasites who have no place in Bulgaria.”

in 2017, he defended his doctoral dissertation in ethnography at the Institute of Ethnology and Folklore Studies of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences on the topic “Rusyns in Central Europe – History and Modernity.” In the text of his research, Kostadinov argued that Ukrainians are “an artificially formed nation on a political basis during the Soviet era.”

His party is also known for its opposition to many measures to combat the pandemic, promoting conspiracy theories and strong warnings against COVID-19 vaccines.

In March 2022, it became known that Kostadinov received a 10-year ban on entry to Ukraine, which was due to his party’s strong pro-Russian orientation in the context of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. For his pro-Russian stance and activities, he has been nicknamed “Kopeykin”, indicating his alleged ties and possible financial support from the Russian government
