Due to strong demand: tomato prices have risen again in Ukraine

27 March 11:17

This week, the Ukrainian greenhouse tomato market has seen another wave of price increases, according to analysts from the EastFruit project, as reported by "Komersant Ukrainian".

Due to consistently low demand for this product, which has persisted in the tomato market over the past few weeks, importers were forced to reduce the volume of these vegetables supplied to the domestic market. As a result, the decrease in supply against a backdrop of relatively stable demand has triggered a new wave of price increases in this segment.

As of today, prices for greenhouse tomatoes have settled in the range of 140–160 UAH/kg ($3.19–3.65/kg), which is on average 16% higher than at the end of last week. Experts attribute this trend to a reduction in the supply of imported tomatoes in Ukraine, with Turkey currently being the main supplier, particularly due to seasonal factors.

It is noted that the current cost of tomatoes in Ukraine is already, on average, 89% higher than during the corresponding period last year. Market participants also do not rule out further price increases if tomato supplies from Turkey to Ukraine do not stabilize in the near future. At the same time, it should be noted that sales of tomatoes from local greenhouse complexes will not begin until mid-April of this year.
