Due to lack of heating: schools in Kyiv switch to distance learning

6 February 15:18

Approximately 45% of educational institutions in the Darnytskyi and Dniprovskyi districts were left without heating after the shelling of the capital. Due to damage to the Darnytska Thermal Power Plant-4, classes in these schools are being held remotely while heat supply is being restored.

This was reported by the press service of the Kyiv City State Administration, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".

Schools without heating

In the rest of the schools in the Darnytskyi and Dniprovskyi districts, the educational process is taking place in person.

“It is important for us not to stop teaching, so we decided to switch to a remote format in institutions where there is no heating. The key condition is a stable power supply, so we are counting on loyal electricity supply schedules from DTEK,” said Valentin Mondriyevsky, deputy head of the Kyiv City State Administration.

The Department of Education and Science is preparing several options for the fastest possible return of students to in-person learning. These include temporarily transferring primary school classes to the nearest schools with adequate conditions, as well as combining several kindergartens into support institutions for the community.

The format of education is chosen individually

Decisions on the format of education are made individually for each institution, taking into account the availability of heating and the possibility of creating safe conditions for children and staff. Parents and teaching staff are promptly informed of all changes through school administrations and district education departments.
