Clean Wednesday 2026: What Not to Do on the Third Day of Holy Week
8 April 00:30
In 2026, Easter falls on April 12 for Orthodox and Greek Catholics, and Holy Wednesday on April 8. This is the third day of Holy Week, following Holy Monday and Holy Tuesday. In church tradition, this day commemorates Judas’ betrayal, and the day itself is associated with repentance, silence, and spiritual reflection. "Komersant Ukrainian" explains the essence of Holy Wednesday and what is permitted and prohibited during this time.
What Is Holy Wednesday
Holy Wednesday is also called Great Wednesday or Passion Wednesday. In Christian tradition, this is the day when believers commemorate Judas’s decision to betray Jesus Christ for 30 pieces of silver. That is why Great Wednesday is considered a day of inner purification, prayer, and repentance.
For the church calendar, it is one of the most important days of the last week before Easter. The OCU emphasizes that the entire Holy Week is dedicated to commemorating the final days of Christ’s earthly life, His suffering, death, and burial.
Why is this day called “Clean Wednesday”?
The name “Clean Wednesday” is more closely associated with folk tradition than with an official church designation. In everyday life, this day was seen as a time to finish pre-Easter cleaning, tidy up the home and one’s thoughts, and prepare for the upcoming, even more austere days of Holy Week. This folk interpretation is widely held in Ukrainian tradition.
That is why in many families, people try to finish their general cleaning by Holy Wednesday so they can devote more attention to prayer, silence, and preparation for Easter.
What, according to tradition, needs to be done on Holy Wednesday
In folk tradition, it is believed that by Holy Wednesday, the main cleaning of the home should already be completed. Also on this day, in some regions, people began or continued preparations for the Easter table: they prepared krashanky and pysanky, and stocked up on food, particularly eggs.
There is also a widespread belief that eggs bought on this day stay fresh longer. This is a folk superstition, not a church teaching.

What is forbidden on Clean Wednesday according to church tradition
In the church’s understanding, the main prohibitions of this day concern not daily life, but human behavior. On Holy Wednesday, it is not advisable to quarrel, lie, envy, insult others, swear, deceive, or commit unkind acts. The Day of Repentance should inspire people to practice restraint, prayer, and self-reflection.
Also, throughout Holy Week, believers are advised to refrain from loud festivities, entertainment, celebrations, and anything that distracts from the spiritual significance of the days leading up to Easter.
Is it really forbidden to sew, knit, or do needlework on Holy Wednesday?
On this day, people avoided working with needles, thread, and sharp objects, linking this to ancient superstitions.
The claim that sharp objects supposedly “attract evil spirits” belongs specifically to the folkloric layer of the tradition.
What else is discouraged on the third day of Holy Week
In addition to arguments and loud entertainment, during Holy Week it is generally not recommended to get married, host banquets, attend entertainment events, or get overly carried away with secular celebrations. It is also advisable to refrain from visiting cemeteries and attending memorial meals on these days, as there are specific dates in the church calendar designated for these purposes.
In other words, the point of the restrictions on Holy Wednesday is not about trivial daily matters, but rather to ensure that a person does not lose their inner focus before Easter.
What is the spiritual significance of Holy Wednesday?
Holy Wednesday reminds us not only of Judas’ betrayal, but also of the choice between faithfulness and betrayal, between repentance and spiritual hardness of heart. Church explanations of this day also mention the Gospel story of the woman who poured precious myrrh on Jesus’ head, while Judas was already harboring the intention to betray Him.
That is why this day is not just another date on the calendar before the holiday for believers, but a reminder of the purification of thoughts, honesty, humility, and the rejection of all evil.
