COVID-19 is gaining momentum again: which regions of Ukraine are most affected and what to do next

25 September 2025 16:23

Over the past month, Ukraine has seen fluctuations in the incidence of COVID-19. According to routine epidemiological surveillance, the growth rate was rapid in some regions. The largest increase was recorded in Rivne region – 7.3 times, in Kirovohrad region – 3.7 times, and in Ternopil region – 2.4 times. The press service of the Center for Public Health reported this in a comment to "Komersant Ukrainian".

In Kyiv, the situation changed in waves: on week 33, the incidence quadrupled, while on week 38 it decreased by 17.9%.

At the same time, the overall picture for the country shows a decline: in week 38 (September 15-21), 11,883 cases were registered, which is 20.4% less than in the previous week (14,926 cases).

Leaders in the number of infected people

During the period from July 21 to September 21, the highest number of laboratory-confirmed cases was recorded in:

  • Kyiv – 6986,
  • Dnipropetrovska oblast – 6740,
  • Khmelnytsky region – 5121,
  • Vinnytsia region – 4724,
  • Lviv region – 4641.

The lowest number of patients was detected in Kherson (405) and Donetsk (443) regions.

Mortality dynamics

Although the number of new cases is generally decreasing, mortality rates in a number of regions are on the rise. The highest number of deaths from COVID-19 was recorded in Kyiv (19 cases), Dnipropetrovska and Poltavska oblasts (11 each), as well as in Vinnytsia (8) and Kharkiv (7).

At the same time, zero deaths were recorded in Zaporizhzhia, Ivano-Frankivsk, and Sumy regions over the past two months.

Why it matters

Ukraine is experiencing a new wave of seasonal growth in respiratory infections, including COVID-19. According to epidemiologists, the elderly, patients with chronic diseases, and healthcare workers remain vulnerable.

It is important to note that official data may not fully reflect the real situation: a significant number of Ukrainians are treated at home without seeking medical attention and testing.

How to protect yourself

The Ministry of Health reminds that vaccination remains the most effective protection against COVID-19.

  • Primary vaccination is mandatory for those who have not yet been vaccinated.
  • Revaccination every 6-12 months is recommended for people over 60, patients with immunodeficiencies, and healthcare workers.
  • Pregnant women are advised to get vaccinated in the second trimester, but vaccination is possible at other times.

Basic preventive measures include regular hand washing, keeping a distance, wearing a mask in crowded places, and ventilating the premises.

Earlier, infectious disease doctor Larysa Moroz said that a new wave of coronavirus could begin in Ukraine in the next two months.
