Darnitsa Thermal Power Plant and Plan B: how Kyiv is preparing for next winter
3 March 20:30
Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko said that along with the restoration of damaged facilities in Kyiv, a plan for decentralized heat supply should be prepared.
She said this after a meeting of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine, Interfax-Ukraine reports, as quoted by "Komersant Ukrainian".
What is it about
According to the prime minister, the Darnytska Thermal Power Plant is part of the capital’s sustainability plan, but Kyiv must present a comprehensive document signed by the responsible persons, which will define both the approach to centralized and decentralized heat supply.
Svyrydenko stressed that the government is not abandoning the centralized model, but considers such facilities to be “extremely vulnerable” in the context of military risks.
This primarily concerns the Darnytska TPP, as well as TPP-5 and TPP-6, which are key sources of heat for the capital.
Why is this important
Kyiv traditionally relies on a centralized heat supply system that covers large areas of the city. At the same time, attacks on energy infrastructure have demonstrated the vulnerability of large generating facilities.
Decentralization may involve the creation of local boiler rooms or modular heat sources, which would reduce the risk of large-scale outages in the event of damage to one of the system’s nodes.
