Shortage of personnel and high prices: what holds Ukrainian business back from switching to green energy

SUNSAY NRG, one of the leaders in the solar energy market in Ukraine, has released the results of a new study on the awareness, attitude and readiness of Ukrainian businesses to implement alternative energy sources. This is the second such initiative of the company, which demonstrates that the issue of energy independence and stability is becoming a key one in business development strategies, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.

The study involved 270 representatives of Ukrainian companies, including enterprises of various sizes and industries. Its goal was to find out how much business realizes the potential of green energy, what barriers hinder the implementation of such solutions, and how companies assess the role of government policy in this process.

The survey results show that businesses are increasingly interested in alternative energy. More and more companies are not only aware of the importance of green transformation, but are also ready to invest in sustainable energy, even despite the challenges. “We see a clear signal: Ukrainian business is looking for stability and energy independence and is ready to implement innovative solutions,” said SUNSAY NRG CEO Sergiy Zinkevich.

New emphasis and telling results

This year, the survey received an expanded focus: for the first time, entrepreneurs shared their vision of energy storage systems. The results were revealing and clearly reflect the direction in which the Ukrainian energy market is moving.

We paid special attention to the business’s assessment of the prospects for solar power plants and energy storage systems. These solutions are becoming key to ensuring energy stability, increasing efficiency and optimizing costs in the long term,” commented Oleksandr Booth, CTO of SUNSAY NRG.

Among the key findings:

  • The level of high awareness of alternative energy among respondents increased by 15.5% compared to last year.
  • The most common barriers are still lack of awareness and high cost of solutions, although the latter has decreased significantly – from 44.9% to 25.2%.
  • A quarter of the surveyed companies point to a shortage of specialists, which emphasizes the need to develop educational programs in the energy sector.
  • The number of companies that are already investing in alternative energy has more than tripled, from 6% last year to 20.2% this year.
  • 40.5% are planning investments in the near future, and another 35.8% are actively considering such an opportunity.

SUNSAY NRG CEO Sergii Zinkevych emphasizes that regular market sentiment surveys and industry analytics help companies better navigate trends and make strategic decisions for their business.

“We are committed to contributing to the sustainable development of Ukraine’s energy system, and we plan to regularly research business needs and share useful market insights,” he said.

SUNSAY NRG is one of the leaders in the solar energy market in Ukraine. The company specializes in the development, installation and maintenance of solar energy systems and industrial energy storage facilities for businesses. In 2024, the company was included in the Forbes Next 250 rating. Over 7 years of work, about 400 projects have been implemented, which is 50 MW of solar energy in Ukraine.
