Democrats in the US will try to abolish tariffs via Greenland

Politicians from the Democratic Party in the US Senate will try to stop President Donald Trump’s plans to impose tariffs on European countries over Greenland. This was announced by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer on Sunday, January 18, according to "Komersant Ukrainian", citing local media reports.

Schumer: Trump is doubling down on his stupidity

“Donald Trump’s reckless tariffs have already led to price increases and damaged our economy, but now he is only making the situation worse. It’s unbelievable that he wants to double down on this stupidity by imposing tariffs on our closest allies in a bizarre attempt to gain control of Greenland,” Schumer said in a statement.

“Senate Democrats will introduce legislation to block these tariffs before they cause further damage to the American economy and our allies in Europe,” Schumer added.

Democrats are in the minority in both houses of Congress

Republicans currently hold 53 of 100 seats in the Senate and 218 of 435 seats in the House of Representatives. Thus, Donald Trump’s party controls both houses of the US Congress.

However, a number of Republican politicians have already expressed their dissatisfaction with Trump’s plans. For example, Alaska Senator Lisa Ann Merkauski.

“These tariffs are unnecessary, punitive, and deeply misguided. They will further alienate our key European allies without doing anything to strengthen US national security,” she wrote on social media. According to the politician, this “directly plays into Putin’s hands.”

“This reaction to the actions of our own allies, who sent a small number of troops to Greenland for training, is harmful to America, to American business, and to US allies. Instead, it benefits Putin, Xi, and other rivals who want to see NATO divided,” Republican Senator Tom Tillis of North Carolina wrote on Twitter.
