Wartime Democracy: Which activities will have to be coordinated with the military

29 August 11:21

Ukrainian Prime Minister Yuliya Sviridenko has issued an order that requires ministers and heads of regional administrations to necessarily coordinate any large-scale and festive events with the military command. This was reported by Ukrayinska Pravda citing sources in the government, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.

According to the new requirements, in the regions such events must be coordinated with the relevant military commands, and in the capital – directly with the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

The instruction, an unsigned version of which was published by UP, states:

“Taking into account the requirements of the article of the law of Ukraine “On the legal regime of martial law” I ask in the case of planning mass (ceremonial) events to ensure their mandatory coordination with the military commands in the area of their responsibility, and in Kiev – with the General Staff of the Armed forces.”

What will actually be banned

It should be noted that this order concerns ministers, heads of central executive bodies, as well as heads of regional and Kyiv city military administrations. That is, it probably refers to mass events organized by the authorities, and not to rallies, public protests or any other public events of citizens.

Also, contrary to popular beliefs, rallies, protests or any other peaceful gatherings of citizens are not automatically prohibited in Ukraine during martial law. However, each specific event may be banned by a decision of local military administrations.

At the same time, the government has not yet officially commented on this information in any way, so it is worth waiting for official documents and reports.
