NATO defence ministers have failed to reach agreement on a plan to finance assistance to Ukraine. This was stated by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, according to "Komersant Ukrainian" citing Evropeiska Pravda.
The proposed plan provided for the allocation of annual aid in the amount of 40 billion euros.
After the failure of the agreements, Stoltenberg said that the allies would continue to coordinate their positions on this issue before the planned summit in Washington. The NATO Secretary General admitted that they still need to work on agreeing on the amount of long-term financial assistance and the issue of Ukraine’s participation in the Washington summit.
Earlier it was reported that Stoltenberg had abandoned his initial plans to create a five-year fund for military assistance to Ukraine due to objections from some NATO member states. Instead, he proposed a new idea – annual commitments by NATO countries to spend at least €40 billion on lethal and non-lethal assistance to Ukraine.
Stoltenberg’s main idea is to turn arms supplies to Ukraine from voluntary contributions to obligations of NATO member states. He also said that nATO has approved the first ever programme of innovative cooperation with Ukraine.
