Ukrainian homes are being filled with warmth. But very slowly
30 October 2024 14:25
The streets of Ukrainian cities and towns are getting cooler, locals are starting to touch the radiators in their apartments, and local authorities are finally starting to inform about the start of heating in the homes of citizens. Komersant found out how the heating season starts in Ukrainian cities.
How the heating season starts in Ukraine
As you know, the decision to start the heating season is made by local authorities. In doing so, they are guided primarily by temperature indicators: if the average daily outdoor temperature is 8 degrees Celsius or lower for three days, there are official grounds to start heating. The readiness of heating networks for the start of the heating season also matters. These factors determine the moment when a decision is made that should warm the residents of Ukrainian cities and towns at least a little bit.
In addition, the old tradition of announcing the start of the heating season with a slight clarification is still alive and well. The season starts with the supply of heat, first of all, to social facilities such as schools, kindergartens, and medical institutions. Moreover, based on requests from their managers.
This is how the heating season in Kyiv, Chernihiv, Vinnytsia and many other cities began between October 14 and October 17. In mid-October, it was social institutions that began to feel the heat. But not in the homes of citizens.

In whose homes it has already become warmer
The local authorities started announcing the supply of heat to all categories of consumers only a few days ago.
Vinnytsia can be considered the leader in this unofficial “warm” competition. At least, based on the information we have.
Back on October 25, the city council’s website posted a message that almost 100% of Vinnytsia’s residential buildings were connected to the heat supply service. Heat is supplied to more than 1,210 high-rise buildings. In addition, it was reported that 74 social facilities have already been supplied with heat.
There is reason to hope that Cherkasy is also among the leaders. On October 23, Mayor Anatoliy Bondarenko announced that the Cherkasy City Council had decided to start the heating season for the population, so heating in the buildings will start on October 24.
Lviv is next. The local city council announced the start of the heating season for all categories of consumers on October 28, 2024.
And on October 29, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko pleased Kyiv residents with the news that starting October 30, due to weather conditions and forecasts of a significant drop in temperature, Kyiv would start the heating season for the housing stock, adding that it would take about 7 days to fully deploy the centralized heating system in Kyiv, according to the technology.

The southern regions of the country have a slightly easier time in this utility race. The mayor of Mykolaiv, Oleksandr Senkevych, announced only yesterday that the local authorities intend to start the heating season on November 1. As usual, he added that the heating will be launched gradually, first of all in healthcare, education and social institutions, and then in residential buildings. According to him, there are 10 days for the rollout.
The Headquarters of the United Communities completed the picture of heat supply across Ukraine. Today, they reported that 68 communities in the Lviv region have decided to turn on heating. Heat has already appeared in the homes of the Sambir, Zhovkva, Drohobych, Boryslav, and Stryi communities.
As they say, it will continue. It’s getting colder outside..
