The damage caused to Ukraine’s environment as a result of Russian aggression is estimated at more than €65 billion. This was stated by the Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources Svitlana Hrynchuk during a briefing, according to "Komersant Ukrainian"
“More than €65 billion in losses and almost 6,500 cases of ecosystem destruction are the scale of environmental losses that our environmentalists and experts have already been able to calculate. However, the real damage caused by the war to the environment is much greater,”
– emphasized the minister.
The official noted that the damage to the environment caused by the actions of the Russians could be irreparable and irreversible for the ecosystem.

“The explosion of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power plant, the pollution of the Black Sea, forest fires due to the hostilities – all of this can have irreversible consequences for nature. Each such case entails changes in ecosystems and has consequences that extend far beyond the borders of our country,”
– emphasized Hrynchuk.
The minister also noted that current estimates of losses do not take into account the situation in the occupied territories, so the real losses could be much higher. She called on the international community to unite around Point 8 of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s Peace Formula and develop a specific action plan to protect the environment. This point provides for countering ecocide – the massive and deliberate destruction of flora, fauna and all living things.
“The world has been fighting climate change for many years, for the ‘good’ state of water and the preservation of natural ecosystems. The methods of warfare used by Russia are nullifying many years of work in this direction. While hundreds of organizations are working for this goal, the Russian aggressor is moving humanity away from it,”
– emphasized the head of the Ministry.
