Fedorov: Artificial intelligence will allow removing drone operators from the battlefield

Artificial intelligence will become a key element in the development of autonomous drones and will allow operators to be completely removed from the front line in the future. This was stated by Mykhailo Fedorov, Deputy Prime Minister for Innovation, Education, Science and Technology, Minister of Digital Transformation, in an interview with RBC-Ukraine, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports
“Our goal is to distance control as much as possible, and then move to full autonomy. This is the next stage in the development of warfare. We need the operator to be able to control the drone from any city in Ukraine,” the minister emphasized.
According to Fedorov, the introduction of fully autonomous systems may take years of development and investment. However, elements of artificial intelligence are already being actively used in military technologies.
“AI is currently used to decode images, identify targets, and process real-time broadcasts. We are also actively developing homing on FPV drones using AI algorithms. We are launching a separate grant program because this is the future of the modern battlefield,” the Minister of Digital Transformation said.
Fedorov reminded that at the end of May, the Ukrainian Defense Forces used an AI-powered drone mother ship for the first time at the front. This device is capable of delivering two FPV strike drones at a distance of up to 300 km, after which they autonomously find and hit enemy targets, including aircraft, air defense systems, and critical infrastructure.
