Landings in Normandy

The Allied landings in Normandy (also known as D-Day, Operation Neptune) were one of the most important operations of World War II. It took place on 6 June 1944 and opened the second front in Europe against Nazi Germany.

The main participants of the landing were the troops of the United States, Great Britain, Canada and other countries united under the command of General Dwight D. Eisenhower. The operation involved a huge mass mobilisation of people, equipment and material resources. The operation involved 156,000 people, 11,500 aircraft, and almost 7,000 ships.

The landing was a very risky operation, as the Nazi defence lines were strong and well supplied. However, thanks to enormous preparations, including intelligence, disinformation and diversionary manoeuvres, the Allies managed to land and establish a foothold on the continent. This paved the way for further victories in Europe and, finally, the end of the war and the defeat of the Third Reich.
