Russian troops attacked a civilian ship in the port of Chornomorsk in the Odesa region with a drone. The ship, flying the Panamanian flag, was transporting corn through the Ukrainian maritime corridor. The attack resulted in casualties among the crew. This was reported by the Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".

What is known about the attack on the ship

According to the port administration, a Russian drone struck the civilian vessel as it was leaving the port of Chornomorsk.

The Panamanian-flagged ship was transporting corn cargo within the Ukrainian maritime corridor.

As a result of the attack:

  • the ship was damaged;
  • there are casualties among the crew members;
  • the injured are receiving the necessary medical care.

The circumstances of the attack and the extent of the damage are being clarified.

Why Chornomorsk is an important port

The port of Chornomorsk is one of Ukraine’s key ports on the Black Sea. Significant volumes of agricultural exports pass through it.

After Russia blocked Ukrainian ports, Ukraine opened a maritime humanitarian corridor through which ships can transport grain and other cargo to countries around the world.

The damaged ship was traveling along this route.

Russia attacked southern Odesa region again

On the same day, Russian troops also launched a missile strike on the south of the Odesa region.

According to preliminary data:

  • at least four people were injured;
  • infrastructure facilities were damaged.

Earlier, Russian shelling in the region had already damaged port tanks and other export-related infrastructure.

Experts note that attacks on ports may be aimed at disrupting the maritime corridor and Ukrainian grain exports.
