The German Foreign Minister called on the European Union to give up its veto power

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadeful stated that the European Union must soon abandon the principle of unanimous voting.
“To be truly capable of acting on the international stage, to become a truly mature actor, we in the EU must abolish the unanimity principle in foreign and defense policy before the end of the current term of the European Parliament,” the politician said on Saturday, April 4, in an interview with newspapers of the Funke Media Group, reports "Komersant Ukrainian".
“I advocate for the European Union to transition to a qualified majority system. All the experience of recent weeks, particularly regarding aid to Ukraine and sanctions against Russia, speaks in favor of such a decision,” the minister added.
Hungary is blocking EU aid for Ukraine
Wadeful articulated his position against the backdrop of Hungary, under the leadership of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, blocking the allocation of a 90 billion euro loan to Ukraine. Budapest accuses Kyiv of obstructing the resumption of Russian oil supplies via the Druzhba pipeline.
It was precisely this impasse, caused by the requirement for unanimity in all EU decision-making, that prompted Wadelful’s statement. According to him, the EU’s inability to make quick decisions in critical situations makes the Union vulnerable and undermines the effectiveness of its foreign policy.
Wadeful on the elections in Hungary: Let the voters decide
Speaking about the parliamentary elections in Hungary on April 12, the German Foreign Minister emphasized: “Hungarian citizens will democratically decide what kind of leadership they want to see. And we are obligated to and will work with any Hungarian government.”
Wadeful made it clear that reforming the EU’s voting mechanism is not directed against individual countries, but rather at improving overall effectiveness on security and foreign policy issues.
