“Hour of silence” in Kyiv shopping malls: why it is necessary and how it works in the world
23 September 22:20
The so-called “hours of silence” may appear in the capital’s shopping centers and supermarkets. This initiative was announced by the deputy head of the Kyiv City State Administration Maryna Honda, reports "Komersant Ukrainian".
During the “hour of silence,” the mall administration dims the lights, turns off music, dynamic screens, and reduces noise.
For whom it is important
The aim of the initiative is to make public space more comfortable for people who find it difficult to be in a noisy environment. This includes, in particular
- people with autism spectrum disorder and ADHD;
- veterans and civilians with post-traumatic stress disorder
- parents with small children;
- older people.
For them, excessive lighting or loud sounds can create additional stress or even cause anxiety attacks.
How it works in other countries
Similar practices are already common in the world. For example, in the United Kingdom, the United States, and Canada, retailers organize special hours for “sensory rest” for customers. They are mostly introduced in the morning, when store traffic is lower.
International experience shows that the “hour of silence” not only makes it easier for vulnerable groups to visit stores, but also creates a culture of inclusiveness in society.
Why is it being discussed now?
In recent years, the topic of inclusion and safe spaces for people with disabilities has been increasingly entering the public discourse. In Ukraine, this discussion is also fueled by the war: more and more civilians and soldiers are facing PTSD and need conditions in which they can feel safe.
