Iran attacked Azerbaijan for the first time: what are the consequences?
5 March 12:14
Iran attacked Azerbaijan on Thursday, March 5. A drone struck the Nakhchivan International Airport.
This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian" with reference to Report and the press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan.
According to reports, the drone, launched from Iranian territory, hit the airport building and exploded. A fire broke out at the site.
The country’s Foreign Ministry reported that another Iranian drone crashed near a school building in the village of Shekarabad.
“We strongly condemn these drone attacks carried out from the territory of the Islamic Republic of Iran, which damaged the airport building and injured two civilians,” the ministry said.
They noted that the attack on Azerbaijani territory violates the norms and principles of international law and serves to increase tensions in the region.
“We demand that the Islamic Republic of Iran clarify the above-mentioned issue as soon as possible, provide explanations, and take the necessary and urgent measures to prevent the recurrence of such incidents in the future,” the Foreign Ministry added.
They also noted that the Azerbaijani side reserves the right to take appropriate measures in response.
The Iranian ambassador to Azerbaijan has already been summoned to the Foreign Ministry. A strong protest will be expressed to the Iranian side and a corresponding note of protest will be handed over.
Azerbaijan deploys air defense systems and concentrates forces on the Iranian border
Earlier, we reported that Azerbaijan had strengthened its military presence on the border with Iran and put part of its army on high alert. Units were transferred to border areas, and military personnel had their leave canceled.
According to journalists, the Azerbaijani command issued an urgent order to strengthen defenses in the southern direction, as the situation on the border, which stretches for more than 700 kilometers, is becoming increasingly tense.
At the same time, the Azerbaijani authorities have stated that they are trying to maintain a diplomatic tone, claiming that all military maneuvers are “exclusively defensive in nature.”
Government officials emphasize that the priority now is to strengthen the state border and prevent possible provocations from the air.
However, analysts point out that Baku’s actions are a direct response to geopolitical turbulence in the region. The risk that conflicts in the Middle East could affect neighboring countries is forcing Azerbaijan to act preemptively.
