Following an investigation, the Irish Data Protection Commission has fined LinkedIn Ireland Unlimited Company (LinkedIn) €310 million for the illegal processing of personal data. This was reported by the Irish Data Protection Commission, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports

This decision concerns an investigation that was launched on 20 August 2018 following a complaint filed by the French non-profit organisation La Quadrature Du Net. The complaint was initially lodged with the French Data Protection Authority and then transferred to the DPC as the main supervisory authority for LinkedIn, which acts as the controller of the processing of the personal data in question.

The investigation concerned LinkedIn’s processing of personal data for the purpose of behavioural analysis and targeted advertising of users who have created LinkedIn profiles.

The investigation revealed that the company did not properly inform users about the use of their data.

“The lawfulness of processing is a fundamental aspect of data protection law, and the processing of personal data without an appropriate legal basis is a clear and serious violation of the data subject’s fundamental right to data protection,” the Commission said.
