Historic gold: Ukrainian becomes European champion in modern pentathlon

yuriy Kovalchuk, 23, from Lviv, won Ukraine’s first ever gold medal at the European Modern Pentathlon Championships under the new rules. This was reported by the press service of the NOC of Ukraine, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports

The final of the continental championship took place in Madrid, where Kovalchuk scored 1588 points and confidently outperformed rivals from Hungary and France

“Yuriy Kovalchuk is the European champion in modern pentathlon! the 23-year-old from Lviv won a gold medal in the final of the European Championships in Madrid. This is the first victory in the history of Ukraine at the continental championship under the new rules of modern pentathlon!” the statement reads.

In the finals, Yuriy scored 1588 points, outperforming the representatives of Hungary and France and confidently climbing to the top step of the podium.

Before that, Yuriy Kovalchuk won the semifinals of Group B.

“The Olympic family of Ukraine, headed by the President of the NOC of Ukraine Vadym Gutzeit, sincerely congratulates Yuriy Kovalchuk, his coaches and the Modern Pentathlon Federation of Ukraine on this outstanding victory! We are proud of this achievement and thank everyone who works on the training of Ukrainian champions!” the NOC of Ukraine said.

New rules, new history

This year’s European Championships were held in an updated format, which has been in effect since 2025. Instead of show jumping, the program includes an obstacle course, and fencing now takes place only in the main round, according to the Olympic system.
