Israeli troops shoot Gaza residents who come to get food, say enclave’s doctors

On Thursday, Israeli forces killed at least 51 Palestinians as a result of shelling and military strikes. Among the dead are 12 people who tried to approach a humanitarian aid facility where food is distributed. Reuters reports this with reference to the medical services of Gaza, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.

Everyone has their own truth

According to Gaza’s medical services, 39 Palestinians were killed by separate Israeli air strikes in the northern part of the Strip. One of the strikes killed at least 19 people, including women and children, in a tent in the Shati refugee camp in Gaza City. Another strike killed at least 14 people and damaged several houses in Jabaliya in the northern part of the enclave. 12 people were allegedly killed while distributing food at a humanitarian aid station on the border between Israeli-controlled territories and Gaza.

The Israeli army said it had detected several attempts by “suspicious individuals” to approach its positions in the Netzarim area of central Gaza. The soldiers claim that they fired warning shots to prevent the approach of suspicious persons and have no information about any injuries. They have not heard about the dead at all.

How humanitarian aid reaches the Gaza Strip

The Gaza Strip is a narrow strip of land on the coast of the Levantine Sea, surrounded by Israel on the other side. In addition to Israel, the Strip has a narrow border with Egypt. The sea waters near the Strip are controlled by Israel.

Even on the border with Egypt, Israel demands access to inspect humanitarian cargo in times of escalation to ensure that there are no weapons for Hamas. Therefore, the delivery of humanitarian aid to the Strip is almost always controlled by Israel.

Currently, Israel channels most of its humanitarian aid through a new US-Israeli organization, the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, which operates several distribution points in areas guarded by Israeli forces. These are narrow places, which are never open at the same time, and where crowds of thousands of people flock. It looks like this:

Gaza’s Ministry of Health reports that hundreds of Palestinians have been killed trying to reach GHF facilities since late May.

The UN rejects GHF’s delivery system as inadequate, unsafe, and in violation of the rules of humanitarian impartiality. Israel claims that it is necessary to prevent Hamas militants from intercepting the aid, which the latter denies.

Palestinians often stay in camps near roads for weeks, trying to make their way to distribution points, where aid trucks arrive irregularly.

The Norwegian Refugee Council has warned that more than 1 million people remain without adequate shelter. The organization said that equipment such as tents and tarpaulins have been blocked by Israel from entering since March 1.

The war in Gaza began after an attack by Hamas militants on Israel on October 7, 2023, when 1,200 people were killed and 251 hostages were taken, according to Israeli estimates.

Israel’s subsequent military operation in Gaza has claimed the lives of nearly 55,600 Palestinians, according to the Gaza Ministry of Health, and displaced nearly the entire population of more than 2 million people.
