Kallas sets deadline for approval of 19th package of sanctions against Russia

20 October 11:17

The 19th package of sanctions against Russia will be approved by the end of the week.

This was stated by the head of European diplomacy Kaja Kallas before the meeting of EU foreign ministers in Luxembourg, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.

“I expect the 19th package to be agreed this week, unfortunately, not today, but the negotiations are ongoing,” she said.

Kallas noted that the package will be agreed before the summit of the community countries next Thursday, October 23.

Prior to that, the European Parliament called on the European Commission to unify anti-Russian sanctions within the 19th package of restrictions by introducing similar measures against Belarus, Iran and North Korea.

More about the sanctions

The package of sanctions includes a number of energy and financial restrictions, including a ban on Russian liquefied natural gas from January 1, 2027, and not from January 1, 2028, as previously envisaged.

Slovakia also expressed reservations about this. However, according to four EU diplomats, the European Commission is expected to release a letter on Monday that should address Bratislava’s concerns.

The European Union continues discussions on the 19th package of sanctions against Russia and is trying to agree on a decision before the European Council summit to be held on October 23-24 in Brussels.
