EU Chief Diplomat Kaja Kallas spoke with Moldovan Prime Minister Dorin Recean about the situation the country is facing after Russia cut off gas supplies to unrecognized Transnistria. She spoke about this in her X, reports "Komersant Ukrainian".

Callas said that in a conversation with Rechan she assured him of the EU’s solidarity with Moldova.

“Russia continues to use gas as a weapon, and once again Moldova is the target of such a hybrid war. Thanks to EU support, Moldova remains resilient and well connected to European energy networks,”

– she said.

Energy crisis in Transnistria

The energy crisis in Transnistria erupted on January 1, after Ukraine cut off Russian gas transit through its territory. The unrecognized republic turned out to be critically dependent on Russian fuel and unprepared for such a step by Ukraine. The territory immediately stopped supplying heat to homes and began selling firewood.

Most residential customers were disconnected from gas. Some still receive a limited amount of natural gas. These are mostly residents of high-rise buildings who cook on gas stoves.

The PMR says it will have enough gas to keep critical facilities running until January 20 in the south of the republic and January 10 in the north.

The Moldovan state hydroelectric power plant, which supplies electricity to Moldova and Transnistria, has switched to coal, which will be enough for 50-52 days of electricity supply. Moldova claims that the country’s energy security is not threatened. In particular, the state is able to import electricity from Romania and Ukraine. However, Transnistria has no such options.

At the same time, it is known that Gazprom can supply gas to Transnistria through the Turkish Stream, but does not do so.

The Moldovan government said that in response to an offer to help find a solution to the gas crisis, Tiraspol called for “not interfering in the internal affairs of Transnistria” and openly ridiculed these appeals.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that Ukraine is ready to help Moldova with coal.
