Chrystia Freeland will work for Ukraine: what is known about her future position

Canadian politician of Ukrainian descent Chrystia Freeland is leaving the government after a 12-year career in politics. She is leaving her portfolio as Minister of Transportation and Inland Trade to take on a new role as Canada’s Special Representative for Ukraine’s recovery, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.
Freeland plans to retain her parliamentary mandate for the next six months, but will not run in the next parliamentary elections.
The government has already appointed new leaders to the vacant positions: Stephen McKinnon is now in charge of transportation, and Dominique Leblanc will be responsible for domestic trade.

The politician comes to her new role with a wealth of government experience. Previously, she was in charge of key ministries such as finance, foreign affairs, and international trade.
Freeland is of Ukrainian descent and speaks Ukrainian, and has a deep understanding of the Ukrainian economy and international processes. At the same time, she apparently has close ties with leaders of various countries and Canadian provincial governments. Therefore, experts believe that her appointment will significantly strengthen the Canada-Ukraine partnership and contribute to the post-war recovery process.
Under her leadership of the Ministry of Finance in 2020-2024, Canada allocated a total of $19.7 billion in aid to Ukraine. Of this amount, $12.4 billion was direct financial support, the highest per capita figure among the G7 countries.
“This is a new stage in my life, and I am delighted to have the opportunity to continue to serve the cause of Ukraine and peace in Europe,”
– Freeland commented on her decision.
Along with her new responsibilities as Special Representative, Freeland intends to focus on academic activities, writing, international security and multilateral cooperation, and the protection of democratic values in the world.
