Who does not support Ukraine’s accession to NATO: diplomat names countries

The United States, Germany, Hungary, Slovakia, Belgium, Slovenia, and Spain are against Ukraine’s invitation to NATO. This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian" with reference to Le Monde.

The media outlet reminded that as NATO foreign ministers are due to meet in Brussels on Wednesday, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga sent a letter to each country, urging them to support the decision to invite Ukraine to join the North Atlantic Alliance.

In addition to this invitation, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy recently raised the idea of involving NATO forces in monitoring a possible ceasefire.

“If we want to stop the hot phase of the war, we must take the territory of Ukraine under our control under the NATO umbrella,” the Ukrainian leader said in an interview with the British Sky News channel.

The new leadership of the European Union (EU) has demonstrated its support for Ukraine at a time when Europe fears a slowdown or cessation of American aid after US presidential winner Donald Trump takes office (inauguration is scheduled for January 20, 2025 – ed.).

In Brussels, however, these hypotheses are not currently being discussed.

“Membership (of Ukraine – ed.) in NATO is an option that is of great concern to many allies,” a European diplomat told Le Monde on condition of anonymity, citing opinions on the matter from Germany, Hungary, and the United States.

According to him, although some countries, such as France and the United Kingdom, insist on inviting Ukraine to join NATO, the current US President Joe Biden refused to authorize it, and his successor (Donald Trump – ed.) has never supported this idea at all.

In addition, Slovakia, Belgium, Slovenia, and Spain are also currently opposed to Ukraine’s membership in the Alliance.
