On January 1, 2026, Cyprus begins its six-month presidency of the Council of the European Union, taking over from Denmark.
This was reported by Yevropeiska Pravda, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.
From today, Cyprus has taken over the presidency of the EU Council on a rotating basis, which will last until July 1. The Mediterranean country replaced Denmark in this role.
The presidency organizes and presides over the meetings of the EU Council (except for the Foreign Affairs Council), sets the agenda and priorities for the next six months, and negotiates between EU countries.
Cypriot President Nicos Christodoulidis has previously promised that his country will make support for Ukraine a priority of its presidency.
The Cypriot presidency, Christodoulidis promised, will facilitate the rapid implementation of a white paper on the future of European defense and an accompanying roadmap to achieve EU defense readiness by 2030.
