When is the SSU Day in Ukraine: date of celebration and history of the holiday
24 March 18:04
The Security Service of Ukraine is a part of the system of state special-purpose bodies that ensure the state security of the country. In order to ensure the effective fulfillment of its tasks, this body has been vested with law enforcement functions and is subordinated to the President of Ukraine. This week marks a professional holiday, which was introduced to recognize the professional achievements of the officers and employees of this agency who faithfully ensure the national security of the state.
The history of the holiday
After the declaration of Ukraine’s independence, it became necessary to create a Ukrainian intelligence service whose tasks were primarily to protect the state security of Ukraine. Therefore, in September 1991, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted a resolution that provided for the creation of the National Security Service of Ukraine and the simultaneous liquidation of the State Security Committee of the Ukrainian SSR.
on March 25, 1992, a number of specialized laws were adopted to regulate the activities of the newly created body, including the Law of Ukraine “On the Security Service of Ukraine”. The adoption of this Law was the starting point in the history of the agency, so the day of its adoption is considered the official date of the establishment of the Security Service of Ukraine.
When is the Security Service of Ukraine Day celebrated?
The SSU Day coincides with the official date of the establishment of this body, but this holiday was established at the state level only in 2001, when the President of Ukraine Leonid Kuchma signed a decree. Thus, the Day of the Security Service of Ukraine is celebrated annually on March 25, which in 2025 falls on a Tuesday.
