The border with Poland is closed again: where the longest lines are forming

30 March 12:05

Traffic has increased at the Ukrainian-Polish border ahead of Easter. The reason is the growing number of citizens returning to Ukraine or planning trips for the holidays. Against this backdrop, queues of cars and buses are already forming at some border crossing points.

This was reported by the State Customs Service of Ukraine and the Western Regional Directorate of the State Border Guard Service, according to "Komersant Ukrainian"

Why have the lines at the border with Poland grown?

The State Customs Service explains that in recent days, traffic flow toward Poland has increased due to the approaching Easter holiday. Traditionally, during this period, the number of people returning home or visiting relatives increases.

That is why traffic congestion is observed at certain border crossing points with Poland, and drivers are advised to check the situation in advance before departure.

Which border crossings are the busiest

According to the State Customs Service, the busiest checkpoints on the Polish route remain:

  • Krakivets – Korczowa
  • Shehyni – Medyka.

These crossings are traditionally among the most popular with travelers, so delays most often occur here during peak periods.

  • Ustyluh — 30 passenger cars and 1 bus
  • Krakivets — 15 passenger cars
  • Shehyni — 30 passenger cars
  • Ugryniv — no lines
  • Rava-Ruska — no lines
  • Hrushiv — no lines

In other words, the largest number of passenger cars at this time was at the Ustyluh and Shehyni border crossings.

What you need to know about the Yagodin border crossing

Border guards specifically noted that passenger cars are temporarily not being allowed through the Yagodin border crossing. Pedestrians are also not being allowed through there.

This is an important point for those planning a route through Volyn, as some drivers may mistakenly rely on this checkpoint as their usual route for exiting to Poland.

Which border crossings are recommended as alternatives

To save time on the road and avoid long waits, the State Customs Service recommends using less congested border crossings.

Among the alternative border crossings on the Polish border are:

  • Ugryniv – Dolgobychiv
  • Rava-Ruska – Khribenne
  • Hrushiv – Budomierz
  • Nizhankovychi – Malhowice
  • Smilnytsia – Kroscienko.

These routes may be more convenient for those who want to avoid traffic congestion on the most popular routes.

What is the situation on other sections of the western border

As of the morning of March 30, there were almost no significant queues at the borders with Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, and Moldova.

Specifically:

  • on the Slovak side, there was only a small traffic jam at the “Uzhhorod” checkpoint—5 passenger cars;
  • on the Hungarian, Romanian, and Moldovan sides, there were virtually no lines;
  • at most checkpoints, traffic flowed smoothly without congestion.

How many people crossed the western border in the past 24 hours

According to border guards, on March 29, the following crossed Ukraine’s western borders with EU countries and Moldova in the Chernivtsi region:

  • 87,000 people
  • 19,000 vehicles

55,000 people entered Ukraine over the past 24 hours, 50,000 of whom were Ukrainian citizens.

32,000 people left Ukraine, 20,000 of whom crossed the border specifically with Poland.

These figures confirm that the Polish route remains the most popular on the western border.

What else border guards noted

The State Border Guard Service also recommended taking into account the possibility of unstable operation of electronic systems at checkpoints. Because of this, additional delays may sometimes occur even where lines are short.

Traffic at the border with Poland traditionally picks up before Easter. The heaviest traffic is recorded at the Krakivets–Korchova and Shehyni–Medyka checkpoints, and as of the morning of March 30, the largest number of vehicles was also expected at Ustyluh.

Drivers are advised to monitor updates from border guards and, if possible, choose less congested crossings.
