Corruption scandal: Zelensky ordered to speed up the reboot of top energy companies
15 November 20:07
The main state-owned enterprises in the Ukrainian energy sector will be completely rebooted. In parallel with the financial audit, the management will be completely renewed.
This is reported by "Komersant Ukrainian" with reference to the statement of the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
“In parallel with a full audit of financial activities, the management of these companies should be renewed. Today, together with the Prime Minister of Ukraine Yulia Svyrydenko and the Minister of Economy Oleksiy Sobolev, we have determined the procedure,” the president said.
Zelensky said that the following steps are planned:
- “Energoatom: in a week, it is ordered to ensure the conditions for the formation of a new supervisory board and a complete reboot of the board.
- “Ukrhydroenergo: a competition for a new head of the company and a new supervisory board will be held immediately.
- Gas Transmission System Operator of Ukraine: a competition for the position of CEO and completion of the Supervisory Board.
- “Naftogaz of Ukraine: contracts of the current Supervisory Board members expire in January 2026. A completely new board should start working in January.
“In the rest of the large energy state-owned companies, the representatives of the state in the supervisory boards should be renewed,” Zelenskyy said.
The President also said that government officials had been instructed to be in constant communication with law enforcement and anti-corruption agencies.
“There should be and will be a prompt and fair response to any scheme detected in companies. Full transparency and purity of processes in the energy sector is an absolute priority,” the President summarized.
As a reminder, on November 10, NABU and SAPO announced the exposure of a large-scale corruption scheme at the state-owned Energoatom. The case involved money laundering and illicit enrichment organized by Ukrainian officials. The losses from its activities amounted to billions of hryvnias, and the scheme was curated by businessman and former business partner of Zelenskyy, Timur Mindich.
Amid the large-scale scandal, Zelenskyy announced personnel changes in the government that will affect two ministries – Energy and Justice – whose heads were implicated.
It is known that amid the scandal, Herman Halushchenko resigned as Minister of Justice. Energy Minister Svitlana Hrynchuk also submitted her resignation.
