9 April 09:37
As of March 1, 2026, funds held by individuals in deposit and savings accounts at banks reached 1.65 trillion hryvnias. This is 38 billion hryvnias (or nearly 2.4%) more than a month earlier.
This is reported by "Komersant Ukrainian", citing statistical data from the National Bank of Ukraine.
The top three banks trusted by Ukrainians with the most funds
PrivatBank
The largest number of individual depositors—and, accordingly, the largest amount of deposits—is concentrated at the state-owned PrivatBank: over 24.2 million people hold more than 632 billion hryvnias in the bank. Of this amount, depositors hold nearly 165 billion hryvnias (equivalent) in foreign currency—this is a quarter of the total funds held by individuals in the bank’s accounts.
A month earlier, Ukrainians held 618.5 billion hryvnias in PrivatBank. Thus, over the course of a month, the amount in accounts increased by 13.5 billion hryvnias, or 2.2%.
An interesting figure shows the amount of potential reimbursement by the Deposit Guarantee Fund for individuals (in the event of bank problems). At PrivatBank, the amount of individual deposits that is NOT eligible for reimbursement is 40 million UAH (out of 632 billion).
Ukrainians hold amounts starting from 10 hryvnias in their PrivatBank accounts. Most often, people hold hryvnia deposits in the bank that do not exceed 200,000 UAH—there are over 19.5 million such individuals. A total of 5,614 people hold hryvnia deposits exceeding 5 million UAH in the bank.
Oschadbank
Next in the popularity ranking among individual depositors is the state-owned Oschadbank. Over 12.6 million Ukrainians hold money there, totaling nearly 243 billion hryvnias. Of this amount, foreign currency deposits account for over 52 billion UAH (equivalent)—this is approximately one-fifth of the total funds held by individuals in the bank’s accounts.
A month earlier, Ukrainians held 237 billion hryvnias in Oschadbank. Thus, over the course of a month, the amount in accounts increased by 6 billion hryvnias, or 2.5%.
Of the total amount of deposits held by individuals at Oschadbank, 6.5 million UAH is not covered by the Deposit Guarantee Fund.
As with PrivatBank, the largest number of depositors at Oschadbank hold amounts up to 200,000 UAH—there are nearly 5.9 million such individuals. There are 3,660 individuals holding amounts exceeding 5 million UAH (among hryvnia depositors).
Universal Bank ( monobankbrand )
The next most popular bank among Ukrainian depositors is Universal Bank (monobank brand). Nearly 10.4 million individuals hold funds there totaling 143.6 billion UAH, of which foreign currency deposits amount to nearly 64 million UAH (in equivalent)—that is almost half.
A month earlier, individual accounts at the bank totaled 139.5 billion UAH. Thus, the monthly increase amounted to 4 billion UAH, or 2.9%.
Of the total amount of individual deposits at Universal Bank, 10 million UAH is not covered by the Deposit Guarantee Fund.
The largest share of depositors holds amounts up to 200,000 UAH at the bank—there are 6.2 million such individuals. 1,124 people have over 5 million UAH in the bank.
Banks with over 1 million individual depositors
Other banks with over 1 million individual depositors include: A-Bank (nearly 4.2 million depositors), PUMB (3.6 million), Raiffeisen Bank (3.36 million), Sens Bank (3.1 million), UkrSibbank (2.04 million), Ukrgasbank (1.56 million), and OTP Bank (1.14 million).
In total, deposits from individuals in these seven banks as of March 1 amounted to over UAH 412 billion. A month earlier, this figure stood at UAH 400 billion. Thus, the increase amounted to UAH 12 billion, or 3%.
In total, deposits from individuals in the top ten banks as of March 1 amounted to UAH 1.43 trillion, which accounts for about 87% of the total deposits from individuals in all 60 banks in Ukraine.
How much do Ukrainians earn on deposits
According to statistical reports from Ukrainian banks published on the NBU website, as of March 1, 2026, the weighted average interest rate on term deposits held by individuals in hryvnia was 13.4% per annum, and 1% for deposits in foreign currency.
What are the alternatives to deposits
A reliable and even more profitable alternative to bank deposits for Ukrainians could be investments in domestic government bonds, which during wartime serve as a significant source of revenue for the state budget.
Other potential sources of investment income include trading in shares of domestic and foreign companies, investing in REIT funds, and purchasing residential real estate or precious metals. For those who like a thrill, there is a whole range of cryptocurrencies, although their circulation is currently unregulated in Ukraine. For tech enthusiasts, there are investments in IT startups.
All these instruments have their own advantages and disadvantages, their own return horizons, and corresponding risks. For many Ukrainians, bank deposits remain the most intuitive and accessible tool for preserving and growing their disposable income.
