Behind-the-scenes plans of the Rada: spring elections even during the war

17 September 09:18

On the sidelines of the Verkhovna Rada, they have begun discussing the possibility of holding parliamentary elections next spring, even despite martial law. MP from the Servant of the People party, Georgiy Mazurashu, told this in an exclusive commentary to "Komersant Ukrainian".

Mazurashu emphasized that the current session of the Verkhovna Rada is unlikely to be the last for this convocation:

“In theory, this session cannot be the last for this convocation of the parliament, because even if a miracle happens and the fighting in Ukraine stops in a few weeks (with fantastic provision of “reinforced concrete” security guarantees for Ukraine), it is not very realistic to hold parliamentary elections by the end of the year, to put it mildly.”

At the same time, the MP noted that there is a possibility that this session could be the penultimate one:

“But the probability that this is the penultimate session is higher. After all, the prospects of holding elections next spring, even under martial law, are being discussed on the sidelines. Although I do not consider this very likely either.”

Mazurashu called on those who want the elections to be held as soon as possible to focus their efforts on ending the war, emphasizing the importance of protecting Ukraine:

“In general, I advise everyone who is very concerned about the issue of holding elections as soon as possible to do everything possible and in everyone’s power to end the war as soon as possible. Starting with the most scarce – defending the homeland with arms in hand.”

Regarding the work of the Parliament at the final stage of this convocation, the MP expressed the opinion that the Verkhovna Rada should work in accordance with the expectations of the voters:

“As for what the parliament should do in the final stretch of the convocation, it would be good to work in the way that the voters, in their obvious majority, expect and ask for.”

Mazurashu emphasized that despite the discussions about the elections, the main priority for MPs remains the security of the country and the effective work of the parliament until the end of their term.
