Only three out of six Ukrainians overcome the first round of the US Open

Three Ukrainian tennis players have reached the second round of the US Open tennis tournament, but three more failed to win their matches at the tournament, reports "Komersant Ukrainian"
Thus, Marta Kostiuk (world No. 19) confidently defeated American McCartney Kessler (No. 63) with a score of 6:2, 6:3. The match lasted 1 hour and 18 minutes, during which Kostiuk served 3 aces, made 6 double faults and converted 4 of 9 break points.
Elina Svitolina (28) defeated Argentina’s Maria Carle (83) in a tense match that lasted 2 hours and 20 minutes. Despite losing the first set, Svitolina managed to seize the initiative and win with a score of 3:6, 6:3, 6:4. As has often happened in recent years, the Ukrainian needed the help of a physiotherapist during the second set.
Angelina Kalinina (55) confidently advanced to the next round, defeating Frenchwoman Asean Dodin (86) with a score of 6:1, 3:6, 6:1. The Ukrainian demonstrated a powerful serve, making 9 aces.

Lesia Tsurenko (85) lost to American Peyton Sterns (47) with a score of 1-6, 5-7. The match lasted 1 hour and 42 minutes, during which Tsurenko did not serve a single volley and converted only 2 of 6 break points.
Diana Jastremska (34) unexpectedly lost to Germany’s Jule Niemayer (101) in a tense three-set match that lasted 3 hours and 10 minutes. The score was 4-6, 7-6, 4-6. Jastremska made 6 aces but converted only 3 of 16 break points.
Yulia Starodubtseva (146) failed to advance, losing to world number 20 Victoria Azarenka (20) with a score of 6-3, 1-6, 1-6. This was only the second match Starodubtseva has played against a top 20 player in her career.
The second round of the US Open will feature a Ukrainian derby: on 28 August at 18:00, Elina Svitolina will meet Angelina Kalinina, which guarantees the presence of at least one Ukrainian woman in the third round of the tournament.
At the same time, Marta Kostiuk will play the 68th ranked player in the world, British Harriet Dart.
