M1 is leaving digital broadcasting: the regulator has revoked the channel’s license

30 March 18:16

On March 26, the National Council of Ukraine on Television and Radio Broadcasting decided to revoke the license of the M1 television channel, which operated through the legal entity Teleodin LLC, according to [Komersant].

The channel broadcast digitally in the DVB-T2 standard as part of the Zeonbud operator’s multiplex (MX-2).

At the same time, the broadcaster remains available on a number of online platforms and cable networks.

What exactly did the regulator decide?

The decision to revoke the license was adopted by the National Council of Ukraine on Television and Radio Broadcasting during a meeting on March 26.

This concerns the license for terrestrial digital broadcasting.

Previously, the channel operated on the MX-2 multiplex, which is serviced by the operator Zeonbud.

Where M1 is still available

Despite losing its digital terrestrial license, the channel remains available on other platforms.

Specifically, M1 can be found:

  • on cable networks;
  • on OTT services such as
    • MEGOGO
    • Sweet.tv
    • Kyivstar TV
    • lifecell TV
    • Vodafone TV.

There has been no official announcement yet regarding whether the channel plans to continue broadcasting on these platforms.

Background: M1 has already cut back on broadcasting

Back in January, the channel ceased satellite broadcasting via the Astra 4A satellite.

In a statement on the broadcaster’s website, this was attributed to the difficult situation in the country and the need to optimize the channel’s operations.

What the channel’s management says

M1’s Executive Producer Natela Chkhartishvili-Zatsarinnaya previously stated that discontinuing satellite broadcasts is a temporary measure.

According to her, the channel expects to resume this service once the situation stabilizes.

What the decision means for the market

The revocation of the license means that M1 will cease broadcasting on the DVB-T2 digital network, which reaches a nationwide audience.

However, the channel can continue to operate:

  • on cable networks;
  • on streaming and OTT platforms.

This may indicate a gradual shift by some broadcasters from traditional terrestrial broadcasting to internet platforms.
