Maguchikh is named the best athlete of the year

Ukrainian Yaroslava Maguchikh was recognized as the best athlete of the year by World Athletics. The award is in the category of female athletes competing in non-running disciplines. This is reported by "Komersant Ukrainian" with reference to the World Athletics account on the social network X.
This is Maguchikh’s third nomination for the International Federation of Athletics award. In 2022 and 2023, she was also on the list of contenders, but did not receive the award.
Yaroslava Maguchikh’s rivals for the title of the world’s best athlete were:
- Nafissatou Thiam (Belgium) – Olympic heptathlon champion.
- Valarie Allman (USA) – Olympic champion in the discus;
- Tara Davis-Woodhall (USA) – Olympic and world champion in the indoor long jump;
- Nina Kennedy (Australia) – Olympic champion and Diamond League winner in pole vault.
Maguchikh competes in the high jump.
According to the NOC of Ukraine, this year was a special one for Maguchikh:
- she became an Olympic champion
- set a world record in the high jump (2.10 m)
- became the European champion
- won the Diamond League final
As a reminder, Yaroslava Maguchikh won a gold medal at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
The Ukrainian will receive $125 thousand in prize money for the victory.
Maguchikh previously announced that she would use part of the money to help the Ukrainian Defense Forces, a psychological support fund, and animal shelters.
