Large-scale blackout, but not in Ukraine: four Balkan countries left without electricity

21 June 2024 15:56

Several Balkan countries experienced large-scale power outages today, 21 June. Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Albania and most of the Adriatic coast of Croatia were left without electricity, reports "Komersant Ukrainian" reportswith reference to Reuters.

The outage disrupted businesses, stopped traffic lights, and caused inconvenience to people during the heat wave. In the Bosnian capital Sarajevo, as well as in the cities of Banja Luka and Mostar, the power supply was completely cut off. In the Croatian city of Split, traffic was brought to a standstill due to the failure of traffic lights.

Energy companies in all four countries reported that they are investigating the causes of the accident. Croatian power company HEP said the outage was caused by an “international disruption that affected several countries”. Albanian TV channel Top Channel, citing unnamed sources, reported a possible accident on an interstate power line in Montenegro, although there was no official confirmation of this information.

The countries’ energy companies are working to restore power supply. The situation is complicated by the fact that the region is experiencing a heatwave, which increases the load on the power grids.
