Fewer imports, first exports: how the electricity market has changed

2 April 18:24

In March, Ukraine reduced its electricity imports by 25% compared to February, down to 942,000 MWh. At the same time, the country resumed electricity exports, which had been suspended since November 2025.

This was reported by the consulting firm ExPro Consulting, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".

How electricity imports have changed

According to ExPro Consulting, electricity imports in March totaled 942,000 MWh, which is a quarter less than in February.

The import breakdown is as follows:

  • 48% — supplies from Hungary;
  • 20% — imports from Romania;
  • the remainder — supplies from other neighboring countries in the EU power grid.

Hungary thus remains the main supplier of electricity to Ukraine.

Electricity exports have resumed

In March, Ukraine also resumed electricity exports, which had been completely halted since November 11, 2025.

The total volume of exports amounted to 30.2 thousand MWh.

Moldova accounted for the largest share of exports—47.5%.

This indicates a partial improvement in the situation in the Ukrainian power grid following a difficult winter.

What happened in previous months

Import trends in recent months have been unstable.

  • In February 2026, imports rose by 41% compared to January—to 1.26 million MWh.
  • During that period, no electricity was exported.

Thus, March became the first month in several months when Ukraine simultaneously reduced imports and resumed electricity exports.
