The Irpin City Council has decided with 28 votes in favor to dismiss the mayor, Oleksandr Markushyn, from office. City council secretary Anzhela Makeyeva became the interim mayor. This was announced by Markushyn himself, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports

The Irpin City Council reported that the deputy corps had passed a majority vote of no confidence in Mayor Oleksandr Markushyn. In accordance with the current legislation, his powers have been terminated ahead of schedule.

According to the Law of Ukraine “On Local Self-Government in Ukraine,” the Secretary of the Irpin City Council is to perform the duties of the mayor.

Markushyn himself has already reacted to the decision, saying that he sees it as a political decision and the influence of his predecessor in office, Volodymyr Karpliuk.

“All the defenders of Irpin, the Armed Forces and the Main Intelligence Directorate, who liberated the city from the Russian occupiers, are now being spat in the face. The national police and titushky did not allow the community to attend the session, the police brought puppets into the hall through the back door and did not allow Ukrainians to vote. At a time when it is necessary to build defense lines in the Kyiv region, the raider-developer Karpliuk buys deputies and uses them to overthrow the constitutional order and orders them to declare no confidence in the legitimate mayor of Irpin,” Markushyn wrote.

He also posted a video from the council meeting, which shows a conflict between the city’s municipal guard and, presumably, the deputies.

According to him, “the coup was being prepared for over a year.”

“First, there was a custom-made criminal case against me, the legitimate mayor. Then – six months of unjustified suspension by the decision of the Pechersk court,” Markushin said.

What is known about Markushyn’s case

The State Bureau of Investigation served Markushyn with a notice of suspicion for illegally traveling abroad in August 2022. Law enforcement officials claim that Markushyn went to Italy not to help the military, but to see his 2-year-old son.

“I went abroad for a few days after the permission of the Kyiv Regional Military Administration, returned, brought two drones and saw my son. The regional police looked into the case for two months and found nothing, while the SBI “drew” a suspicion in two days. I believe that the case against me is politicized and ordered by my opponents,” Markushyn said at the meeting.

He added that he is the sole guardian of his son, as his wife died a month after giving birth. At that time, the man had not seen the child for six months, since his son was taken abroad after the outbreak of hostilities in the region.

According to the prosecutor, Markushin did not provide any documents confirming his volunteer activities abroad.

on January 24, the Pechersk District Court of Kyiv suspended Markushyn from his duties as mayor and sent him to custody until March 22 with a possible bail of UAH 30 million.
