The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Cyprus has begun the procedure of revoking “golden passports” from “problematic” holders who negatively affect the country’s reputation. Among them is Ukrainian billionaire Ihor Kolomoisky, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports, citing Politis media.

Recently, the media outlet even published a list of 77 foreign investors whose “golden passports” were revoked by the Council of Ministers. It also contains the names of the providers, law firms and auditing firms through which these passports were obtained.

The list also includes the names of well-known Russian multimillionaires (for example, Oleg Deripaska), as well as Malaysian financier Joe Low, who is wanted for financial crimes. Along with the investors, their passports were also revoked. Some of the investors whose passports were revoked are already under investigation, the media reports.

The reasons for the revocation of the “golden passports” are false information provided by the holders at the stage of obtaining the documents, as well as the investors’ involvement in criminal offenses. Some of the passport holders declared false information about their marital status or the amount of their investments, while others had criminal records or negative reputations in their home countries.

The revocation of golden passports can be delayed due to complicated procedures and litigation. However, the Council of Ministers has the right to decide to revoke a passport if it is in the interests of the country and society. In general, the procedure for revoking golden passports is ongoing, and new problematic cases may still be identified.
