The Ministry of Culture has decided to rename the Tchaikovsky National Music Academy of Ukraine – from now on, the institution will be called the National Music Academy of Ukraine.
This was reported by the Ministry of Culture, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.
“We continue the process of decolonization of Ukrainian culture. The decision was made in accordance with the Law of Ukraine “On Condemnation and Prohibition of Propaganda of Russian Imperial Policy in Ukraine and Decolonization of Place Names,” as well as the laws “On Higher Education” and “On Culture,” said Deputy Prime Minister for Humanitarian Policy and Minister of Culture Tetiana Berezhna.
The Ministry of Culture noted that the reason for the renaming was the professional opinion of the Expert Commission of the Ukrainian Institute of National Memory, which determined that the use of the name of Pyotr Tchaikovsky in the name of the institution is a symbol of Russian imperial policy and does not comply with current legislation.
According to the order, the rector of the academy must submit a new version of the Charter within the established timeframe and ensure that all procedures related to the name change are carried out. The necessary changes will also be made to the constituent documents and the contract of the head of the institution.
The Ministry of Culture emphasized that the renaming does not affect the status, educational process or artistic activities of the Academy.
“The decision is aimed at fulfilling the requirements of the law and is part of the state policy of decolonization and cleansing the public space from the symbols of Russian imperial policy,” the ministry emphasizes.
The next step will be a public discussion with the staff of the institution, the expert community and the public on the issue of naming the National Music Academy of Ukraine.
