russia is trying to use the democratic process in Moldova to overthrow the current government. This was stated by Moldovan Foreign Minister Mihail Popsoi, Kommersant Ukrainian with reference to the Associated Press.

“The Russians are learning and adapting, and they are trying to use the democratic process against us to overthrow the democratic government in Moldova. We know that the Kremlin is going to invest a lot of energy and financial resources through its proxies to try to get their way. They are trying to bribe voters and use them to bribe citizens,”

– the minister told the newspaper.

Popsoi acknowledged that the situation with Transnistria is quite tense, but he praised the changes and transformations that Moldova has achieved in recent years:

“The situation will remain tense as long as the front line [with Transnistria – ed. When we look at Moldova’s energy security, two years ago it was very low. Now Moldova is quite independent, has alternatives and can choose where to buy gas and electricity.”

The same can be said, he added, about the country’s defence capability, the resilience of its key institutions, such as intelligence, police and justice reform.

“Moldova is moving in the right direction, despite the enormous challenges,”

– michal Popsoy said.

on 28 February 2024, the unrecognised Transnistrian Moldovan Republic held a “Congress of Deputies of all levels”, whose delegates adopted an appeal to Russia to protect the TMR from Moldova’s pressure. On the eve of this congress, Russia conducted information operations in Moldova similar to those it had conducted on the eve of its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
